Step 3: Build Box Step Frame

Using 2"x6" lumber, cut two pieces to the desired width of the step. Next, cut several 8 inch blocking pieces. A blocking board should be positioned on each end, and every 16" - 24" on center. Secure all pieces together with deck screws. 24" for 2"x6" surface boards and 16" for composite or 5/4"x6" surface boards.

Place the box frame on the concrete patio stones. Verify that the frame sits firmly on the patio stones and remains level in both directions. Secure the box frame to the extension board using two deck screws every 12 inches.
