Step 2: Position Patio Stones

Dig a shallow hole to the width of the step. The hole should be approximately 4-6 inches deep. Place a 2 - 4 inch base of sand or crushed rock into the hole. Wet, compact and level the material. Next, position the concrete patio stones on the sand base. Ensure the patio stones are level in both directions, and level with each other. Use the remaining sand to make any adjustments. The patio stones should be positioned every 16" - 24" on center. 24" for 2"x6" surface boards and 16" for 5/4"x6" or composite surface boards.
