Frank and Adele - Pool Deck Project
Summer 2004

7/2/04 - Still Finished!

I just wanted to add these few photos, shot at night to show the lighting. I used a combination of two kits by Malibu lighting. One kit had the rectangular ones, another kit had some stick-in-the-ground lantern-looking lights, and some spotlights. I used the rectangle ones around the deck railing, and down the stairs. I used two of the lantern lights at the top of the steps, and I was going to use one of the spotlights for the pool, but it wasn't bright enough and just kinda made a small circle of light in the middle, so I bought a low-voltage, 20watt floodlight. That works great- not too bright, and not too dim. In addition, I made some small rectangular lights to go along the step between the main deck and the walkaround. They're not meant to be bright, just enough light to show there's a step there.

This one shows the lantern lights I mounted on the gate posts. I drilled down about 8 inches so I could hide the wires below the deck rail.   My wife and my brother relaxing, enjoying the deck.

Plastic chest to keep some of the toys. Also, you can see one of the step lights.   Here, you can see both of the step lights. I made these lights by using two outdoor electric boxes, lights from the rectangular lights that were part of the kit I bought (same ones that are on the railing posts), and then I took some rectangular light switch plates, and glued in some small rectangles cut from plastic frosted drop ceiling light grills. Didn't turn out too bad. It was either that, or $25 a piece for the ones that Malibu makes. I wish I would have remembered to put that fence segment by the skimmer back in after I vacuumed, before I snapped this photo!

This is a view of the step lighting from below. You can barely make out the switch along the left, bottom post. I have two 3-way light switches installed, one at the bottom, and one at the top with a GFCI outlet near the patio table. Everything is enclosed in outdoor waterproof enclosures and everything is on GFCI breakers.
